In the Senegalese village of Yonti, Iman Tierno keeps his community together by ensuring spiritual cohesion. But the peace of the village is threatened when his daughter gets engaged to the son of his estranged brother Ousmane. Tierno is wary of Ousmane because of his connections to an extremist sheikh and his desire for power. The engagement leads to a battle between the two brothers, the peaceful villagers and the fundamentalist movement. Tierno tries to keep his family and the village together through his spiritual leadership in order to protect everyone from a religious upheaval. But the sheikh’s regulations quickly take hold, so that the villagers have to fear violence and control. Director Mamadou Dia’s multi-award-winning debut film plays with the power factors that lie behind the structures of family, religion and society.
