For the first time, the africologneDIALOGFORUM will take place as part of the European Conference on African Studies (ECAS), which will be hosted by the Global South Studies Center (GSSC) at the University of Cologne in 2023. Panels and roundtables such as Making and unmaking the imperial museum or Decolonizing Academia shed light on the necessity of structural and institutional change in the context of a process of decolonization. africologne presents a panel on the topics of recognition, restitution and reparation:
Calls to “provincialize” the West and decolonize the social sciences are now being joined by demands for global reparations and restitution put forward by countries of the South and allied movements in countries of the North, relating to the past and present consequences of asymmetrical relations between the West and the rest of the world. The panel will address the nature of the demands for restitution and compensation, the reasons for their current resurgence, the reception they are receiving in the countries of the North, and the preconditions for the implementation of a reparations and restitution agenda that benefits the countries of the South.
