In the Senegalese village of Yonti, the Iman Tierno keeps his community together by taking care of spiritual cohesion. But peace in the village is threatened when his daughter becomes engaged to the son of his estranged brother Ousmane. Tierno is wary of Ousmane because of his ties to an extremist sheikh and lust for power. Thus, through the engagement, a fight develops between the two brothers, the peaceful villagers and the fundamentalist movement. Tierno tries to keep his family and the village together through his spiritual guidance to protect everyone from a religious overthrow. But the Sheikh's regulations quickly prevail, so that the villagers have to fear violence and control. Director Mamadou Dia's multi-award-winning debut film plays with the power factors that lie behind the structures of family, religion and society.
